  • The much-anticipated H2OBX Waterpark opened Thursday, June 22nd, in the Outer Banks (OBX) welcoming guests to one of the most innovatively designed and uniquely located waterparks in the world.

Designed with classic coastal architecture at the forefront, ADG developed the unique waterpark design to reflect the feel of the Outer Banks, offering resort-style comfort along with traditional family fun. The newest waterpark in North Carolina, it sprawls across 20-plus acres near the Wright Memorial Bridge, the northern gateway to the Outer Banks coastal region. The convenient location allows 70% of the inbound and outbound Outer Banks tourism traffic a window view of the expansive waterpark, including slide towers and pools.

The $46 million H2OBX sets a new benchmark in Carolina coastal tourism attractions and will be experienced by hundreds of thousands of families who vacation in the Tide Water and Outer Banks regions.

ADG, as the lead developer on the project, and working with the renowned Weber Group, carefully designed and themed H2OBX to embrace the culture of the Outer Banks in a relaxed and scenic environment. Vacationers, families and waterpark enthusiasts will be immersed in the rich history of coastal Carolina as H2OBX pays tribute to legendary pirates, boat building and the Wright brothers, while enjoying modern amenities and exhilarating new attractions.

H2OBX delivers enhanced popular attractions as well as several first-to-market slides and experiences, all delivering varying degrees of thrills, lengths, drops, turns and intensity suitable for guests of all ages. Many of the attractions at H2OBX offer cutting-edge innovation including several of ADG’s own innovative water ride attractions. Twin Tides Wave Pool delivers an ocean-simulated current, tide and waves that guests love, but unlike traditional wave pools, it features "dual beachfront” entrance points on opposite ends. Deep Six Adventure Lagoon is a revolutionary adventure attraction, featuring climb, crawl and balance soft mat obstacles and swim zones. Additional attractions include multiple slide complexes, river rides and Calico Jack’s Cove, an immersive, multi-level, pirate-themed, play structure, offering waterslides and interactive water effects. Several fusion waterslides, boast special effects including aqua-lucent lighting to increase the thrill factor.

In keeping with the resort feel, ADG carefully designed H2OBX’s park layout to include numerous places to relax and spend the day enjoying the atmosphere. 50 private cabanas offer first-class amenities and luxury guest service in a private oasis setting. Shaded seating areas, and multiple food and beverage outlets deliver variety and quality, from snacks to gourmet.

“H2OBX will certainly be showcased by the World Waterpark Association in a class of its own. We take great pride in having the opportunity to deliver the most progressive and exciting water park attraction to open on the Outer Banks”, said Brian Czarnecki, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for H2OBX. “We are thrilled to be welcoming our first guests and honored to show off this incredible park.”

    Renowned Waterpark Development Team

H2OBX developers Ken Ellis, Arthur Berry III, Tim Gantz and Jeff Malarney each bring substantial experience in their respective fields; waterpark development, planning, operations and market tourism. Ken Ellis, president and CEO of Aquatic Development Group (ADG), the premier waterpark design/build company in the U.S., is also co-owner with Arthur Berry III of Camelback Resort, home to Aquatopia indoor waterpark and Camelbeach outdoor waterpark. Tim Gantz is the former owner and operator of America’s Largest Outdoor Waterpark, Noah’s Ark, and Jeff Malarney, former Navy JAGC, has been intimately involved in the North Carolina vacation rental industry, recently serving two terms on the North Carolina Real Estate Commission, and a local Outer Banks resident and practicing attorney.

ADG served as the lead designer and builder of H2OBX. Drawing on decades of experience, ADG’s team designed the park to include exceptional first-to-market and hybrid attractions with attention to detail and distinctive features that guests of all ages and interests will enjoy. WhiteWater West was the lead waterslide supplier and installer on the project, and the renowned Weber Group designed the expertly themed buildings and structures.

“This has been an extraordinary project because of my own personal involvement and vested interest in H2OBX,” said Ellis, “I’m extremely proud of the talented and diligent team at ADG and the work put forth by so many others who have created such a unique waterpark. H2OBX is incredibly innovative because we had the full force of the industry’s best people behind it.”

  • Aquatic Development Group (ADG), one of North America’s top water park design/build companies, has recently completed the $25 million renovation of the old Wild Water Kingdom, an hour North of Toronto, which closed in 2014, and is opening this summer as Wet ‘n’ Wild Toronto.  This is ADG’s third full park renovation project in the last six years, having previously overseen the renovations of Ocean Breeze  Water Park  in Virginia Beach, VA and Wet n Wild Splashtown in Houston, TX.

The 45-acre former Wild Water Kingdom property was acquired by Premier Parks LLC in 2016 who then chose ADG as their partner to design and oversee the construction of their new Wet n Wild Park.  Premier and ADG have a long standing relationship in the industry, having worked together on over eleven projects within the past two decades.

Upon visiting the preexisting Wild Water Kingdom, ADG observed the park to be in complete disrepair.

“There had been no upkeep since the closing of the waterpark.  Pipes were frozen, buildings were falling apart and the landscaping was completely overgrown,” notes Jim Dunn, Executive Vice President for ADG.  “But the bones of the property were in good shape overall and the value of the location was undeniable.  We felt confident we could create a vision for the park that would live up to the Premier Park standard”.

ADG employed their trademark Indepth™ approach to create, design and build a project around Premier’s desire to create a “premier” guest experience while maximizing revenue generating opportunities throughout the park with strategic design enhancements to existing guest flow patterns, operations and in-park capacity.  To bring this vision to reality their plan included not only incorporating world class attractions and amenities that emphasized the bright and colorful trademark look of the Wet n Wild brand, but also dug deep to include electrical upgrades, operational enhancements, and new walkways to improve guest circulation patterns throughout the park.

“ADG’s vision of seeing beyond the debris at Wild Water Kingdom and comprehending the potential of the park was truly an asset,” said Hue Eichelberger, COO of Premier Parks LLC, “We’ve seen the exceptional work ADG has done, time and time again, making it an easy choice for us to pick a designer, builder and construction manager for our projects.”

To most efficiently manage the time line and budget, ADG retrofitted existing park buildings and equipment which allowed for additional capital to purchase new attractions for the park. Major attractions include a new raft ride, a six-story speed slide, a mat racing slide, a wave pool, lazy river, and two children’s play areas.   ADG’s filtration systems were also installed throughout the park.

“Wet ‘n’ Wild Toronto was a challenge, ADG consistently saw beyond the problems and issues that posed delays to the project and pushing through them.” Said Kieran Burke, President of Premier Parks LLC.

The grand opening of Wet ‘n’ Wild Toronto occurred on June 30, 2017.

  • An evolution is occurring in the industry, and as evidenced in the growing variety of new water ride attractions appearing throughout the market, it is making park owners think twice before they revert to the old “add-a-slide” mentality when it comes time to increase their offerings or update their property.

Thanks to recent developments in wave system configurations and technologies, new wave-based attractions – water rides created to get people off lines and into the water – are being designed with several objectives in mind: Create a point of differentiation; Enhance overall guest experience; and Significantly increase rider throughput and capacity.  And deliver it all in a similar footprint to that of a slide complex.

    EVOLUTION in SURF WAVE APPLICATIONS

Over the past decade, sheet wave technology has taken the waterpark industry by storm with skill-based surfing simulators like the FlowRider® that allow parks to bring a real-world surfing experience to guests anywhere in the world.  Now another new option has come to market that provides a gentler, easier platform for first time “wanna-be” surfer who wants the thrill of the ride, without having to put in the time to develop the skill.

A radical new design innovation from FlowRider® and Aquatic Development Group (ADG), known as the The LatiTubeTM, allows for the wave angle and speed to be manually controlled and fine-tuned in order to perfectly match the rider’s ability. With minimal instruction guests of all ages start on a low, gentle wave that gradually increases in size and shape until the rider is fully ensconced in a “tube”, allowing them to experience the thrill of ocean surfing without having to put in the work.

    BOOGIE BOARDING TAKES CENTER STAGE

Another twist in the surfing arena is the introduction of the first Boogie Boarding Surf Ride, dubbed Breaker Beach.  Developed by ADG, these perfectly sized and timed breaking waves allow guests to launch two-at-a-time from a unique center peninsula and ride a boogie board the entire length of the pool, similar to catching waves out in the ocean and riding them onto shore.  As a skill based attraction, each ride offers a different experience as guests can ride again and again to improve their technique.

Winning the Leading Edge award for innovation, the industry saw the first Boogie Boarding ride installed in 2016 at Water World just outside of Denver, CO.  “Having a boogie boarding beach in a land-locked state has brought a unique experience to our guests, and they are loving it!” says Joann Cortez, of Water World.

The Next Generation in Wave Pools

Recent advancements in wave pool geometry have led to ground-breaking twists on the shape, size and usage of the traditional wave pool.  New Dual Beach/Dual Entry Wave Pools are as unique looking as they are to experience, with a shallow depth and diamond wave pattern that allows guests to use the entire pool, traversing all the way from one end to the other.  And with no “dead space”, twice the usable area, and twice the beach, capacity is virtually double that of a traditional wave pool.

“Guest Response to our Twin Tides wave pool is astronomical,” says David Allacher, Aquatic Supervisor for Splash Cove in Shawnee, KS who built the first Twin Tides wave pool in North America designed by ADG.  “They love this wave pool!  They walk-in, see the waves rolling and they are ready to go!”

A second Twin TidesTM wave pool opened this summer at the new H2OBX water park in NC.  “We chose this wave pool because of its uniqueness and marketability, as well as its ability to deliver us much more capacity in less space than the traditional wave pool,” says Ken Ellis, Developer and Co-Owner of H2OBX.

    Lazy River No More

Utilizing the latest in wave and propulsion technology, action rivers are taking center stage and transforming the typical river ride experience into a fast, fun and thrilling attraction that will keep guests riding over and over again.  Combine this with advanced theming and branded elements, and your typical park river just turned into an adventure.

Then take it up another notch!  Adding to the uniqueness and fun of the river itself, are the addition of uniquely designed ports of entry and exit that utilize the river’s wave action to create a wave pool, virtually eliminating the need for any lines.   ADG’s Tidal RiverTM ride is one such example of innovative wave geometry that utilizes one wave system to create two experiences within the same attraction.  This immersion of the idea that the “line is the ride,” enables guests to be immediately drawn into the ride experience with no negative down time.

Toddler SIZED WAVES Take Center Stage.

Even the youngest guests can now enjoy their own wave powered water ride.  Mini wave pools, specifically designed for toddlers and the younger crowd, provide a fun yet gentle wave experience for our next generation of waterpark guests.  Incorporating wave action alongside the traditional spray-and-play components, these mini wave attractions cater to the specific desires of our youngest guests.

Not to be forgotten, however, is the accompanying adults.  The most forward thinking of these types of attractions, such as the Mini HarbourTM by ADG, take it a step forward and include extras such as side walls with built-in seating areas that extend throughout the length of the attraction.  Not only does this provide easier accessibility to children at multiple points though out the attraction, the more comfortable setting encourages families to stay and play longer, thereby enhancing the overall experience and time on premise.

    INNOVATION & THE PARK EXPERIENCE

As we examine these new trends in wave-based water ride attractions, one critical component that they all have in common comes to the forefront.  Each of these water rides can easily be expanded to create a complete destination experience for guests, easily augmented with ample deck space, shade areas, landscaping and rental cabanas, providing park owners the ability to create a family friendly oasis that lends to increased time on property and greater per-cap spend.

Unlike the area you get surrounding the base of a slide complex, these new water rides become home-base destination areas for families to comfortably spend their “day at the park”.  And while slides are an essential component of any water park – their thrill factor cannot be denied – wave based water rides create the perfect complement and offer virtually no wait, so guests enjoy more time in the water, or relaxing by it with food and drinks.  Something they can’t do while waiting on a slide line.
