Theatre fire and smoke protection is a fixture in performance facilities. The panel will provide a basic overview of fire and smoke protection at the proscenium opening. Understanding codes, key drivers, and requirements for proscenium opening protection along with the conventional solutions to protect the proscenium opening will be developed. From this, a review of code changes and updates related to proscenium protection will be identified. Specifically, the panel will focus on the use of smoke control systems and integrated building design that could change proscenium protection methodology and assumptions.

This session qualifies for 1.25 AIA/HSW/CEU credits

Learning Objectives

1. Identify the current methods of protecting a proscenium opening allowed by the International Building Code (IBC).
2. Illustrate and define each method evaluating advantages and disadvantages of each.
3. Derive what each method means for the design of the building as well as its operation.
4. Explore and inspire possible alternative solutions to be implemented in future building designs.
