Lady Liberty - a true New Yorker!
Turn her over to reveal an all-American line up of Political Animals on her flip side:
The GOP's Elephant & the Dem's Donkey - 1828 presidential candidate Andrew Jackson, who was called a jackass by his opponents, decided to use the donkey in his campaign posters, becoming the first politician to co-opt his opponent's barbs and turn them into a winning campaign. Years later, the great cartoonist Thomas Nast made the animal into a symbol of the Democratic party and added an elephant to the mix to represent his own party, the Republicans.
The Thanksgiving Turkey & the Bald Eagle - Ben Franklin was pleased to see the nation's first official seal looked more like a turkey than an eagle, claiming the latter was a bird of "bad moral character" and by comparison the turkey was "a much more respectable bird". In defense of the eagle, whose image has been used since ancient times to represent strength, hope, leadership and vision, it never asked for the job.
