French Knot, established by Lindsay Mason in 2012, is a cold weather fashion accessories company that specializes in hats, headbands, hand warmers, mittens, and more. Each piece is designed in Massachusetts by Mason and is then hand-knit and hand-embellished by over 1000 fair trade artisans in Nepal, Peru, and now South Africa.
French Knot, named after Mason's favorite embroidery stitch, celebrates design elements such as vibrant colors, inviting textures, and ornate, embroidery and embellishments in every handmade piece. The line is comprised of high quality yarns (merino, mohair, and alpaca) whose inherent properties make them an ideal material for high-performance winter wear; naturally warm, absorptive, and soft.
Mason’s designs combine feminine embroidery with eclectic patterns and bright colors, which are then executed by highly skilled Nepalese and Peruvian knitters. With skills that have been passed down through generations, these women hand-spin wool, hand-knit hats and gloves and hand-felt the ornate gift items.
French Knot’s mission is to create one-of-a-kind, functionable accessories that celebrate hand embroidery and knitting techniques while providing women in developing countries a living wage.
French Knot began importing some of the world’s best luxury mohair from South Africa to Nepal in 2016 and now has expanded to working with a group of knitters in South Africa as well.
