On a crisp autumn day in November, Professor Shannon Maher and her students all trooped out of the subway, to visit the factory of Down Right in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Professor Maher teaches a home products development class to these juniors at FIT. “Home products are usually imported, and it is a rare opportunity to see the manufacturing process firsthand”, states Professor Maher.
Saul Moreno, national sales manager presented an overview of the attributes of the different fills and shells, that make a comforter , pillow and other bedding products. The students then toured the factory to watch the assembling process firsthand. Of course, everyone had to taste the home style rugelach baked in Brooklyn.
“It was a very inspiring experience to learn about the entire process of the product”, and “I had a blast and learned a lot”. The students’ feedback was very positive and enthusiastic.
“These are our future designers and trendsetters” says Mordechai Fried, president. “It is very important to give back to the community. “
