  • 10 Motifs that Surprise the Eye in a Mix-and-Match Collection that Glows.

    NEW YORK, NY. – February 1, 2017

TEXTIIL, purveyor of modern, global home goods and textiles, announces the North American debut of its “Ancients & Royals Pillow Collection”, at the NY Now Winter Market, Javits Center, New York City, February 4-8, 2017. The collection can be viewed at Textiil - Booth 640, Handmade® Global Design, River Pavilion, Level 4.

Change the pillows, change the room! If the “Ancients & Royals Pillow Collection” had a motto, that would be it. The entire 10-piece collection is designed to mix-and-match. Combine all 10 motifs, or select a smaller grouping. The design constellation is totally up to you.

Each Javanese batik pillow in the collection was selected to surprise the eye. The overall look is luminous, with a palette of golden-yellows on grounds of pure black or warm white. Each motif has its own distinct design personality: “Brilliant Coin” offers a joyful take on dots; “Radiant Veil” provides an ethereal play on light; and “Lantern Light” evokes the ambiance of fire behind ironwork.

Curious? Stop by our booth to create a merchandising mix for your shop or design firm. We have a table set up for that purpose. “Great design can begin with unpredictable combinations,” said Textiil founder Sally Weinberg. “The motifs range from dramatic to fun to romantic, and the hues are radiant and unexpected. Cleverly combined, they lend pop and vibrancy to any style of décor.

All of the pillows in “Ancients & Royals” are made using traditional block batik methods from Indonesia. Lengths of cotton are stamped with copper blocks that have been dipped in melted wax to produce the vibrant designs.

In 2009, Indonesian batik was awarded a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designation. The honor bolstered a renewed interest in the ancient craft. Some of Java’s most exciting designers and artisans are eager to return batik to its rightful place in the world of textile arts, and to broadcast its beauty beyond regional borders. Textiil is proud to work with a select cohort of such artisans. Together, they combine a respect for tradition with bold style experiments.

Said Weinberg of the NY NOW debut: “To show these batiks to North America for the first time is so exciting. It was the thrill of discovery that first prompted me to launch Textiil. And it is that delight in discovery that I want everyone who sees the collection to experience, too.”

  • Curves and Curiosity: A Batik Pillow That Doubles as Conversation Piece.

    NEW YORK, NY. – February 3, 2017

TEXTIIL, MODERN + GLOBAL Home Goods and Textiles, announces its first-ever entry to NY NOW’s “Best New Product Awards”. The entry is a pillow called “Buckle and Bone”. A panel of NY NOW experts will judge and determine the winner on site at the NY NOW Winter Market 2017, Javits Center, New York City, February 4-8, 2017. The pillow can be viewed at Textiil, Booth 640, Handmade® Global Design, River Pavilion, Level 4.

“Sometimes a pillow needs to take center stage,” said Textiil founder Sally Weinberg. “We hope “Buckle and Bone” is that pillow.” Curious and compelling, it features a luminous pollen-gold palette on a background of black. The motifs are abstract, but graphic. “They’re open to interpretation,” said Weinberg. “But to me, they look like a surprising mix of buckles and bones.”

A go-to for designers, the pillow shows well in any décor. In traditional settings, it appears elegant; in modern homes, it looks mid-century. Toss it on a window seat, and the vibrant palette makes it an instant statement piece. Or, group it with the other pillows in Textiil’s “Ancients & Royals” collection for greater impact.

The pattern appears textured, almost suede. But, it isn’t. Rather, this is an illusion created by a batik process that was used to create the pillow. The method yields color variations that give the impression of depth. The look is both compelling and stylish.

“Buckle and Bone” is created with batik from Java, which is renowned for the variety, complexity, and beauty of its batiks. Thanks to its practitioners, both experienced and emerging, the island’s artisan batik industry is experiencing a revival. In 2009, UNESCO designated Indonesian batik to Indonesia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The “Buckle and Bone” pillow is one of 10 designs in Textiil’s “Ancients & Royals Pillow Collection”. The entire collection debuts at Handmade® Global Design, NY NOW Winter Market 2017, Booth 640, February 4-8, 2017.

  • On View, a Place Where Rice and Gardens Sing the Blues

    NEW YORK, NY. – February 4, 2017

TEXTIIL, Modern + Global Home Goods and Textiles, announces the selection of two of its products to the SustainAbility: Design for a Better World Display. The natural indigo dye pillow and tablecloth can be viewed at the NY NOW Winter Market 2017, Javits Center, New York City, February 4-8, 2017 on the North Concourse.

Look up—the sky is blooming! “Sky Garden”, that is—an indigo batik tablecloth from Textiil. It was accepted, along with an indigo pillow called “Falling Rice”, to NY NOW’s SustainAbility display. Breezy in blue, both products are sustainably made in Indonesia. “Sky Garden”, named for its celestial floral design, is lively and fresh. “Falling Rice”, dubbed for its tossed-grain pattern, is plump and easy-going with a look that says happy-at-home.

Only products and manufacturers deemed environmentally conscious and socially responsible are accepted to the display. Textiil is honored to be included. “We create home goods for the new North American shopper---the buyer whose definition of beautiful includes how something is made,” said Textiil founder Sally Weinberg. “Natural indigo dyes aren’t just good for the planet and the people who use them. They also account for the exquisite range of blue tones in the cloth.”

“Sky Garden” and “Falling Rice” are part of Textiil’s “Abundant Indigo Collection”. “Drop by our booth to see the rest,” said Weinberg. “Lake Diamond” is a fresh blue-and-white block print; “Woodland” is geometric and modern in moss and blue; and “Tulip Parade” has a farmhouse quality that makes it an instant classic.

In August 2017, Textiil will introduce brand new patterns to the “Abundant Indigo Collection”.

    ABOUT INDIGO FROM INDONESIA
Indonesia boasts 11 types of indigo plants, all of which can be used to make blue dyes. Textiil works with artisans who employ a dye-making process that involves fermenting the plant’s leaves with brown sugar. The depth and shade of indigo’s signature blue is determined by the type of plant chosen, the number of times the cloth is dipped in the dye, and whether the indigo is blended with other natural dyes to create greens and browns.
