Nazareth Residency Programs

A Message from Charmaine Chan, DO

Designated Institutional Official and Osteopathic Recognition Program Director
Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

Charmaine Chan, DOWelcome to Nazareth Hospital! We are a 230-bed community hospital which serves the changing urban population of Northeast Philadelphia. We are also a part of Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, which includes Mercy Fitzgerald in Darby, Pa., St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pa., and Saint Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Del. This partnership allows us to share resources as well as opportunities for education.

As a community hospital with a commitment to serve the underserved population at the edge of Philadelphia, we have demonstrated our commitment to excellence in training the next generation of healthcare professionals with our American Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency programs in Internal Medicine, Transitional Year, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology and General Surgery. We have also achieved ACGME accreditation for a Cardiology Fellowship. For our Osteopathic residents in Internal Medicine and Transitional Year, we have Osteopathic Recognition; but training is open to allopathic residents who may be interested in additional modalities to help patients heal.

Additionally, we have accreditation from the Council for Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) for our Podiatry Residency. Our Podiatry residency boasts high volume operative opportunities and a new limb salvage program that allows our residents to work closely with our vascular surgeons. Our Pharmacy residency is currently on hold due to changes in the pharmacy structure as we work more closely with our sister hospital, St. Mary Medical Center. We will be announcing a new direction for the residency in the academic year 2024-2025, so please stay tuned. What remains unchanged, however, is our commitment to a truly intercollegiate environment, where all our residents learn and support each other to provide our patients with the best possible care. We have a Resident Leadership Council with representation of our training programs and a Nurse Trainee Council, both of which allow trainees to work closely with team members of different specialties to enhance communication and creatively solve issues of patient care.

Our hospital’s affiliations with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), Drexel University College of Medicine, and Temple University School of Podiatry Medicine allow our trainees to refine their mentorship and teaching skills. Currently, 10 PCOM third year medical students participate in our clinical campus for an entire year: 5 students at Nazareth Hospital and 5 at St. Mary Medical Center.  Various medical students from Drexel and Temple University as well as other medical schools also participate in rotations through our hospital.

Just as we value our commitment to graduate medical education, we cherish our mission to provide quality care to everyone, especially the underserved populations in the greater Philadelphia community. Our residents are encouraged to participate in hospital driven community service events, as well as projects that have been developed through our partnership with PCOM’s medical student groups.

We look forward to meeting with you if you are a 4th year medical student looking for a residency in Internal Medicine, Transitional Year, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology or Podiatry. We are looking for resident leaders who value a training program driven by core values of reverence, justice, stewardship, integrity and commitment to those who are poor, and who are excited by the chance to have an impact in the early development and improvement of our programs.

If you are a medical student who values a supportive learning environment and a family atmosphere and are interested in rotating with us, please submit our application for rotations form.
