CalABLE allows people with disabilities to save up to $15,000 per year and up to $100,000 in total without losing vital public benefits, such as SSI or Medi-Cal. Earnings in these savings accounts are not subject to federal or state income tax, so long as they are spent on qualified expenses. Eligible participants must have onset of disability before age 26 and either qualifiy for SSI/SSDI or have a disability certification. CalABLE is anticipated to open for business in Spring 2018.
