From strawberries to peppers, every fruit and vegetable has a protective peel or skin that nature uses to keep it fresh. Made from materials found in fruit, Apeel adds a little extra “peel” to the surface of fresh produce to slow water loss and oxidation — two factors that cause spoilage.

Available for organic and conventional produce, in an ever-growing number of categories, Apeel is the first plant-derived, post harvest technology that doubles or even triples the shelf life of fresh produce, bringing value to the entire supply chain from farm to kitchen.

    ABOUT APEEL TECHNOLOGY

Every plant on earth has a peel or skin that protects it. From oranges to apples to tomatoes and raspberries, the materials found in the skins and peels of plants are ubiquitous and consumed in the human diet in high quantities every day. Apeel’s plant-derived technology provides produce with a little extra “peel” that slows the rate of water loss and oxidation — the primary causes of spoilage. Apeel is made of plant-derived materials that exist in the peels, seeds, and pulp of all the fruits and vegetables we already eat. Apeel doubles to triples the shelf life of many types of fresh produce which reduces food waste from farm to retail shelf to at home. Apeel is the only plant-derived end-to-end supply chain innovation that creates an optimal microclimate inside of every piece of fruit that travels with it from the farm through consumption. • Apeel To Reduce Single-Use Plastic Waste on Houweling’s English Cucumbers by Over 60,000 Pounds Per Year

SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA (October 1, 2019)— Apeel Sciences, one of Fast Company’s 50 Most Innovative Companies and a CNBC 2019 Disruptor 50, today announced an agreement with Houweling’s Group, a world-renowned greenhouse grower and marketer that is dedicated to delivering a full complement of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers while constantly innovating to reduce its environmental footprint. The Houweling’s Group will have access to Apeel’s plant-based technology to replace the single-use plastic wraps on its English cucumbers, reducing food and plastic waste at the same time.

"We are so excited to partner with Houweling’s Group knowing that sustainability is built into the fabric of their organization and we have the same mission of reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills every year,” said Gordon Robertson, Apeel Sciences’ Chief Revenue Officer. “Our growing network of suppliers is committed to using our technology to deliver longer-lasting produce, but we are incredibly proud to see Houweling’s utilize our technology as a way to replace the use of plastic wrap which will ultimately eliminate thousands of pounds of plastic waste per year.”

“We have a rich history of investing in green business practices, leading the industry to a more sustainable future, which is why Apeel is the perfect partner to help achieve our goals in protecting the planet,” said David Bell, CMO of Houweling’s Group. “We saw an opportunity with Apeel’s unique plant-derived solution that has proven to reduce food waste, but when we recognized Apeel could be used as a complete replacement for the functional plastic wrap on cucumbers, we became really excited. With the launch of Apeel-treated Houweling’s cucumbers, we will be addressing a significant pain point for environmentally conscious consumers. This enables us to bring sustainable solutions to our retail partners and create a pathway to significantly reduce plastic from the supply chain.”

This partnership comes at a time when approximately 18 billion pounds of plastic waste enters into the oceans annually.[1] According to the UN Environment, only 9% of all plastic waste produced has been recycled,[2]revealing the crucial need to reduce plastic use at the source.

Houweling’s Group partners with top retailers on the west coast, supplying them with greenhouse grown produce year-round. Houweling’s can be found in leading membership-based club stores, national grocery chains, and regional grocers in the western USA. Apeel cucumbers will be available soon to retailers who share the goal to meet consumer demand to move away from plastic.

The Houweling’s and Apeel agreement comes after Apeel's news last month that U.S. retailers will soon have year-round access to Apeel fruits and vegetables that stay fresh up to two to three times longer than untreated produce. Apeel’s supplier partnerships will enable a consistent supply of Apeel avocados, limes, asparagus, and apples - and now cucumbers - for U.S. retailers and consumers. This growing network of innovative grower-packer-shippers are committed to using Apeel’s plant-derived technology to deliver longer-lasting freshness and less waste on retail shelves and in homes across the country.

    • As Apeel builds its U.S., Peru, Mexico, and Chile supplier base, longer-lasting Apeel produce to launch in Kroger Family of Stores across the country

    • Collaboration advances Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social impact initiative as Apeel’s solution is expected to prevent millions of pieces of produce from going to waste

    • Apeel is introducing two new produce categories in Kroger’s Cincinnati market this fall: Apeel limes and Apeel asparagus, the first Apeel vegetable

CINCINNATI, OHIO, AND SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA (September 18, 2019)— The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), America’s largest grocery retailer, and Apeel Sciences, a 2019 CNBC Disruptor 50 and Fast Company Most Innovative Company, today announced that Apeel’s longer-lasting avocados will be available in more than 1,100 Kroger stores in the U.S.

Kroger will also introduce two new produce categories, Apeel asparagus and Apeel limes, through a pilot in its Cincinnati market this fall.

“Kroger is excited to offer more customers Apeel avocados and introduce longer-lasting limes and asparagus, marking another milestone on our journey to achieving our Zero Hunger | Zero Waste vision,” said Frank Romero, Kroger's vice president of produce. “Apeel’s innovative food-based solution has proven to extend the life of perishable produce, reducing food waste in transport, in our retail stores and in our customers’ homes.”

“Kroger is leading the way to alleviate the food waste crisis at every level, from its supply chain to its retail stores to the homes of over 11 million customers who shop at Kroger every day,” said James Rogers, CEO of Apeel Sciences. “We’re excited to expand our partnership with Kroger to further prevent food waste while simultaneously giving families more access and time to enjoy healthy fresh produce.”

The Kroger expansion follows a pilot of Apeel avocados the retailer launched one year ago in 109 Midwest stores that significantly reduced category food waste. Apeel avocados, asparagus and limes maintain their just-harvested quality longer than produce without Apeel and are less reliant on refrigeration, reducing food waste and extending customers’ access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Kroger and Apeel’s retail partnership focuses on tackling the country’s increasingly urgent food-waste paradox. Today, 40 percent of the food produced is thrown away, yet 1 in 8 Americans struggle with hunger. Redirecting even one-third of this food would help feed everyone in need. Additionally, food waste contributes roughly 8% of annual greenhouse gas emissions and is considered a top cause of climate change.

Apeel’s partnership with Kroger is expected to prevent millions of pieces of produce from ending up in a landfill every year, resulting in:

    • Millions of avocados “rescued” from going to waste
    • Dozens of acres of farmland preserved
    • Emission reductions of thousands of metric tons in greenhouse gases
    • Over a billion gallons of water use savings
    • 100,000+ GJ of non-renewable energy reductions
