Cure SMA is dedicated to the treatment and cure of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare genetic neuromuscular disease, characterized by progressive deterioration of alpha motor neurons which leads to paralysis and death if left untreated. It remains the leading congenital cause of death amongst children under the age of two.
Since 1984, we’ve directed and invested in research that has shaped the scientific community’s understanding and subsequent treatment of SMA. Today, young children diagnosed with SMA now have a fighting chance – a dramatically improved prognosis and quality of life thanks to new effective therapies and other promising treatments on the horizon. The key is early diagnosis and early treatment. Cure SMA’s SMArt Moves wants all parents and healthcare professionals to:
