The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway Company (WLE) is the largest regional railroad in the state of Ohio and one of the largest regional railroad in the country, handling over 145,000 carloads per year. The company has lines ideally situated in both the Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale plays in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Wheeling and Lake Erie handles significant rail carloads of frac sand, natural gas liquids, transmission pipe, and other shale-related materials. WLE interchanges with three Class I rail carriers - Canadian National Railway, CSX Transportation, and Norfolk Southern as well as fourteen other regional and shortline rail carriers providing customers with competitive rail rates through multiple route options.
