  • The open joist TRIFORCE® has been evaluated for equivalent fire-resistant construction to dimensional lumber or structural composite lumber

    After more than 50 years in the industry, Barrette Structural Distribution Inc., based in Quebec, Canada, has maintained its cutting edge. It manufactures Open Joist TRIFORCE®, an engineered floor joist that features an open-web configuration for strength and easy MEP access.  It is constructed entirely of wood, finger-joined with waterproof structural adhesive that is NES and CCMC approved. 

    Barrette designed TRIFORCE® to help builders meet both the 2012 and 2015 International Residential Code® (IRC) which requires that unprotected floor/ceiling assemblies exceed a minimum level of fire resistance to address safety concerns. Before now, the cost of achieving this fire resistance has limited builders to expensive options.

    “Based on thorough testing conducted by an approved independent laboratory, and evaluated and found compliant by Uniform ES, open joist TRIFORCE® has demonstrated outstanding fire performance as per evaluation report #539,” said Brian Ellenberger, National Sales Director.  

    Technology plays a big role in the manufacturing of TRIFORCE® open joist. The process is entirely automated to ensure precision assembly, product consistency and good appearance.  All wood components of TRIFORCE® joists are cut and machined with computer guided accuracy. Finally, every joist is tested individually with a proof load greater than its required design load and undergoes periodic destructive testing.  

    Made 100% of wood, we have seen our product used in efforts including “green” building, passive structures and housing trends that address concerns of millennials,” added Brian Ellenberger.

    The manufacturer has also seen trends in panelization that include floor panels and works closely with builders to innovate new ways this concept can make them more competitive in the market.

    Trimmable and Doing away with metal connectors

    The open joist TRIFORCE® is a mass-produced open web joist with a structural-quality OSB panel at one end which can be adjusted on site up to 24 inches. Doing away with metal connectors, it is built entirely of selected wood and assembled using finger-jointed technology and structural-type waterproof resorcinol glue. It is light, strong and highly maneuverable, making floor system assembly more efficient.

    TRIFORCE®’s open design also enables faster, easier installation of plumbing, electrical wiring and HVAC.

    All TRIFORCE® joist components are cut, grooved and assembled robotically in our unique, environmentally-friendly production facility. Every joist is individually load-tested beyond its original design specs. Joist breaking point is also regularly tested during production to ensure optimum strength and reliability.
