Description

When the armed forces of the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine during the last week of February 2022, it was really just an escalation of a war that has been going on for almost a decade. Nevertheless, the conflict has been fought by a variety of firearms, some old - some new, that tell a story of armed conflict that belongs more to the 20th century than it does to the 21st. Although some Russian units have been armed with more contemporary examples of firepower, for the most part the guns of the Russo-Ukrainian War date to the Cold War and some even World War II. Designs created during the era of the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov, Nikolay Makarov, Sergei Simonov & Vasily Degtyaryov have been spotted everywhere from Kharkiv to Mariupol' and Kyiv. Even old museum pieces that entered the service of the Romanov dynasty over a century ago like the Maxim machine gun and the Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle have been returned to service in the effort to oppose Russian domination. Although we do not know how this war will eventually end, we do know that the Guns of the Russo-Ukrainian War give us many reasons to pay close attention.
