If you’re like many of the folks I speak with every day, you’re working tirelessly to be a good steward of purchasing policy and compliance. You’re doing all of this while managing internal challenges within the organization with limited resources and time. Most assume their surplus disposition processes are compliant with their surplus policy and that they are using industry best practices. This assumption results from the idea that surplus isn’t worth thinking about strategically or because they aren’t aware of problems within their organization.
What many fail to realize is there are blind spots in their organization due to not having mechanisms in place to provide visibility and accountability into their process. A lack of transparency and/or control can expose them to the risk of non-compliant disposal of government property. Improper disposal often results in bad press, increased scrutiny and additional oversight from both outside and within the agency.
