  • Chiquita Leverages Shazam’s Technology to Take Shoppers and Retailers on a Journey to Learn What Lies Behind the Blue Sticker

Fort Lauderdale, FL – July 12, 2018 – Chiquita Brands International, the world’s foremost banana purveyor, announced a new partnership with Shazam, the popular audio and visual recognition app, which will help consumers discover how Chiquita is leading sustainability efforts in an emotional and engaging way. Utilizing the AR/VR expertise of creative agency Dffrnt Media, consumers will be able to scan a Shazam Code on the iconic Blue Sticker via the app, and virtually “peel back” to learn more about Chiquita’s commitment to transparency and sustainability in addition to what Chiquita does, day after day, to deliver the promise that stands “Behind the Blue Sticker.”

“At Chiquita we are keen to open up doors in our industry,” said Jamie Postell, Director of Sales North America for Chiquita. “We truly believe that leading the industry obliges us to invite consumers and retailers to better understand and see the actions we are taking to produce, ship and provide the best possible fruit.”

Starting in mid-July, the Shazam Code will appear on 200 million Chiquita Blue Stickers in the US and several European countries for a four-week period. Consumers will be able to access an AR experience via the Shazam app that will then transport consumers into the tropics through Virtual Reality. Essentially, they’ll be able to follow the journey of a banana from Chiquita farms in Latin America, to the port facility, right across the Atlantic and all the way to their kitchen table via their favorite grocery store.

“We are thrilled that people will be able to Shazam bananas and to help Chiquita share its sustainability story,” said Miles Lewis, SVP Shazam International. “Chiquita will be the first brand to leverage our visual recognition technology in the fresh produce aisle. This partnership offers an accessible, immersive platform sharing Chiquita’s message in an authentic and engaging way to both consumers and retailers.”

Bananas are among the top sellers across grocery stores, making them present on almost every kitchen counter or table across the country. This gives Chiquita a unique opportunity to leverage its iconic Blue Stickers as a powerful touchpoint to allow consumers to interact with the brand in a fun, but also educational way. Chiquita’s “Behind the Blue Sticker” initiative assures consumers that the iconic Blue Sticker stands for high-quality, delicious bananas, and – above all – sustainable bananas. For this reason, the “Behind the Blue Sticker” initiative includes various innovations in farm management and logistics with an impact on waste, emission reduction CO2 and water footprint, and much more.

This campaign is launching Mid-July in the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Greece and Germany for a four-week period.

  • Fort Lauderdale, FL – September 2018 – As World Education Day commences on September 28, Chiquita Brands International, the world’s foremost banana purveyor, is proud to announce it has reached 33% of its education aid program goals.  The goal is to reach 100 schools and 20,000 children by the year 2020, and to date, Chiquita has provided support for 33 schools. This includes building and renovating school infrastructure as well as providing learning materials for the children. Chiquita currently provides these educational benefits for the children of its farm-workers throughout the countries where its business is rooted, including Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama and Honduras.

“We believe that educating children is one simple way we can make the greatest impact on the families and communities of our employees,” said Jamie Postell, Director of Sales North America for Chiquita. “At Chiquita, it is so important that we stay true to the pillar that reminds us to be a Good Neighbor, and we believe this education program helps us to do just that.”

The current educational aid program supports the children of Chiquita farm worker. In Costa Rica and Guatemala, Chiquita provides school children a special kit containing many of the basic materials required by the Education Ministry, while in Panama and Honduras, Chiquita provides scholarships.

In addition, Chiquita initiates and supports community projects, such as investing in school infrastructure, helping children receive an education, creating environmental awareness and promoting social empowerment. Chiquita firmly believes that helping children receive a valuable primary education will have a positive, long-lasting impact on not only the children, but also the communities they reside in.

“We are thrilled that by 2020 Chiquita plans to reach 100 schools and 20,000 children by building and renovating school infrastructure as well as providing learning materials,” said Jamie Postell. “By starting on our own farms with pilot projects, we intend to expand our program to even more countries.”

Chiquita is not only involved in education for school-aged children, but also looks to provide healthcare aid as well. For example, in Costa Rica children in the banana farm neighborhoods are invited to receive visual and dental care, education and free teeth cleaning kits. The impact of such outreach is especially valued in areas where educational levels tend to be low, and where access to diagnostic facilities is limited due to distance from medical centers and the cost involved.

  • Banana brand remains committed to sustainability with annual reduction of 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions

Fort Lauderdale, FL – October 18, 2018 – Chiquita Brands International, the world’s foremost banana purveyor, remains committed to its sustainability efforts by reducing energy consumption of its more than 15,000 40-foot container fleet. In 2009, Chiquita began a comprehensive refrigerated container upgrade program which has led to an annual reduction of 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Thanks to improvements in design and operating efficiency, the new containers have several advantages:

    • Less energy is required
    • Equipped with greenhouse friendly refrigerants
    • Insulation materials lead to a reduced emission footprint

Prior to January 2015, 7,000 units had been replaced. Between January 2015 and December 2017, 4,570 older containers were replaced with 5,700 new ones. Despite the 25 percent increase in the overall number of containers, Chiquita achieved an 11 percent reduction in electricity consumption.

The impact of this fleet renewal is substantial – with each new container, Chiquita achieves an energy savings of up to 35 percent compared to the energy spent on older containers. Even greater is the amount of energy saved with Quest software that automatically shuts down the container compressor without affecting the quality of the stored fruit.

“Looking back over these past years work with the container fleet upgrade, we can proudly say we have achieved our goal!” said Jamie Postell, Director of Sales North America for Chiquita. “We’ve saved an equivalent of the CO2 emitted by 3,000 cars per year – that’s no small feat!”

As a result of these improvements, Chiquita has achieved an electricity savings of 34 million kilowatt hours per year. In sustainability terms, this leads to an annual reduction of 17,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
