  • Investment to accelerate nationwide high-tech greenhouse expansion and accessibility to premium quality, locally grown produce.

BROOKLYN, NY (June 20, 2018) – Gotham Greens, a leading urban greenhouse developer and grower of locally and sustainably grown produce, has announced the closing of $29 million in Series C equity funding last month. The new round brings the company's total funding until date to $45 million, not including bank debt. Since its pioneering launch in 2011, Gotham Greens has grown from a single urban rooftop greenhouse in Brooklyn to a multi-state indoor farming leader and one of the largest hydroponic leafy greens producers in North America. The round was led by the company's existing investors, including the Silverman Group, along with a significant new investment from Creadev, a global private equity investment firm controlled by the Mulliez family.

"This funding enables us to continue on our path of rapid growth that is providing consumers with fresher, better tasting, locally grown produce while transforming urban real estate and promoting sustainable agriculture," said Viraj Puri, co-founder and CEO. "We're inspired every day by the dedication and talent of our team to grow and purvey exceptionally high-quality, nutritious produce while contributing to the better food movement."

Gotham Greens grows fresh produce in technologically advanced, climate-controlled urban greenhouses in close proximity to retailers and food service providers. This ensures year-round supply chain reliability, transparency, and traceability. The company currently owns and operates 4 production-scale facilities in NYC and Chicago totaling 170,000 square feet and has another 500,000 square feet under development in 5 states. The company announced new greenhouses in Chicago and Baltimore earlier this year. The funding will help finance the expansion trajectory, widen distribution, grow its team, and enhance research and development in controlled environment food production techniques, data science and machine learning.

"The oversubscribed financing is strong validation of our proven farm unit economics, efficient utilization of capital, growth rate, and best in class brand," said Eric Haley, Co-Founder and CFO. "We are excited to welcome Creadev to the Gotham Greens family and for this next phase of growth to bring local produce nationwide."

"Indoor farming is one of the most exciting and promising sectors in the world of food and ag-tech. Gotham Greens is a clear market leader and is positioned for significant growth. We were highly impressed by the company's proven track record, greenhouse profitability, exceptional product quality and human-driven values," said Delphine Descamps, Managing Director, Creadev USA. "We believe that the Gotham Greens team will continue to significantly influence how fresh produce is grown and distributed both in the US and globally."

Gotham Greens' innovative business model combines proven hydroponic controlled environment agriculture together with proprietary cultivation techniques and the art of growing. The company reports best in class crop yields under the leadership of managing partner and renowned plant scientist, Jenn Nelkin Frymark. Gotham Greens' greenhouses are powered by 100% renewable electricity and yield up to 30 times more crop per acre than conventional agriculture while using 90% less water and eliminating agricultural runoff and the use of harmful chemicals. The company's growing methods and shortened supply chain reduce risk of food-borne pathogens. By locating its greenhouse farms in cities, Gotham Greens also eliminates the environmental footprint and food waste linked to shipping produce long distances, while advocating for improved healthy food access, environmental education and 'green collar' economic development.

  • From steel to greens: leading urban agriculture company expands to Baltimore with 100,000-square-foot state-of-the-art greenhouse facility at historic steel mill.

BALTIMORE, MD (May 08, 2018) – Tradepoint Atlantic, a 3,100-acre multimodal global logistics center in Baltimore, Maryland featuring an unmatched combination of access to deepwater berths, railroads, highways and storage space, announced today that Gotham Greens, a rapidly growing agtech startup and leading local produce brand, will open a state-of-the-art hydroponic greenhouse at the site of the former Bethlehem Steel mill.

Gotham Greens’ expansion to Baltimore represents the third city in its growing network of high-tech urban greenhouses, after New York and Chicago. The initial phase of the new greenhouse facility will occupy over 100,000 square feet in the northern part of Tradepoint Atlantic, and is scheduled to open in early 2019. Gotham Greens’ Baltimore facility will create over 60 full-time jobs and will bring a reliable, year-round, local supply of fresh produce to serve retail, restaurant and food service customers throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

The climate controlled farm will be powered by 100% renewable electricity and recycled irrigation water using proprietary methods that yield more than 30 times that of conventional farms, with higher levels of food safety and environmental sustainability.

"We are thrilled that Tradepoint Atlantic has attracted an innovative and growing company like Gotham Greens to Maryland," said Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. "Their unique approach to urban agriculture, in an area once known for steelmaking and shipbuilding, will be an asset to the community and our state's economy. Tradepoint's prime location provides a competitive advantage for fresh food businesses like Gotham Greens to reach a significant mid-Atlantic customer base. Gotham Greens' locating at Tradepoint is yet another example of how Maryland – and Baltimore – is open for business."

“Gotham Greens’ decision to locate at Tradepoint Atlantic is yet another step forward towards bringing 17,000 quality jobs to eastern Baltimore County,” said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. “Tradepoint Atlantic continues to establish itself as a major economic force for the region, attracting diverse businesses with their desirable proximity to the mid-Atlantic market.”

Gotham Greens’ flagship greenhouse, built in Brooklyn, NY in 2011, was the first commercial scale urban greenhouse facility of its kind in the United States. After opening new locations in New York, the company expanded to Chicago in 2015 by building the world’s largest rooftop farm. Spurred on by its industry-leading agtech expertise and the growing demand for local and artisanal food, Gotham Greens has grown from a single urban farm operation into a multi-state greenhouse developer and operator, dedicated to bringing premium-quality produce to communities across the country. At the time of opening for the new Baltimore facility, Gotham Greens will own and operate 500,000 square-feet of technologically advanced greenhouses across eight facilities in five states.

“Baltimore is the ideal home for Gotham Greens’ expansion to the mid-Atlantic region. We’re thrilled to bring our brand of premium-quality, safe and sustainably-grown produce to supermarkets, restaurants and communities throughout the region,” said Viraj Puri, Co-Founder and CEO of Gotham Greens. “We’re honored and humbled to join the rich heritage of Maryland farmers, growers, and food producers. Urban agriculture, at its core, is about reconnecting with the community through food, jobs and economic development. To that end, we’ve found a great partner and are proud to be part of the American industrial turnaround story taking place at Tradepoint Atlantic.”

“We are very excited and extremely proud to welcome Gotham Greens to Tradepoint Atlantic,” said Eric Gilbert, Chief Development Officer of Tradepoint Atlantic. “Today marks a true milestone, in the continuing revitalization of Sparrows Point, where a community synonymous with the production of steel will now be home to a leading agriculture tech startup producing locally-grown, premium produce while bringing green jobs to the community. Gotham Greens is another example of the diverse tenant base we are bringing to a site once dominated by a single industrial user. This diverse tenant base will provide stability to a community hard hit by decades of decline in American industry.”

JLL, a professional services and investment management firm offering specialized real estate services to clients seeking increased value by owning, occupying and investing in real estate, serves as the exclusive broker for Tradepoint Atlantic.

  • Innovative Agriculture Facility Will Create Approximately 130 Jobs and Serve as the
    Next Chapter in Pullman’s Renaissance

CHICAGO, IL (March 15, 2018) – Mayor Rahm Emanuel today joined Gotham Greens founders Viraj Puri and Eric Haley and community leaders in Pullman to break ground on what will be Chicago’s largest agricultural greenhouse. The 140,000-square-foot Gotham Greens greenhouse near 107th Street and Doty Avenue will create approximately 60 permanent and 70 construction jobs and strengthen Pullman’s ongoing renaissance.

“Gotham Greens’ decision to double down and build a second greenhouse is a vote of confidence in Chicago and another sign of the economic renaissance underway in the historic Pullman community," Mayor Emanuel said. “Pullman's historic past is matched only by its growing economic resurgence today, thanks to partners like Gotham Greens.”

The new facility will produce local, premium quality vegetables and herbs year-round for retailers, restaurants and institutional foodservice customers. Using state-of-the art growing methods that include hydroponics, evaporative cooling systems and renewable energy resources, the $12.6 million complex is expected to produce approximately 30 times the yield of conventional agriculture per acre while using 10 percent of the water.

The expansion reflects the company’s success growing and selling premium quality produce year-round in technologically advanced indoor farms. Besides its Pullman locations, Gotham Greens currently owns three greenhouses in New York City and has several facilities in development in other US cities. Gotham Greens employs over 160 people and partners with community organizations to support job training, wellness, and environmental education programs in both Chicago and New York.

“Thanks to the leadership and hard work of Mayor Emanuel, Alderman Beale, the City of Chicago, CNI, and all of our community partners, Pullman has been a great place to innovate and do business,” Viraj Puri, co-founder and CEO at Gotham Greens said.  “We’re producing millions of pounds of fresh produce annually fornational and local grocery stores and foodservice operators across Chicagoland, far exceeding our expectations. This is the ideal time for us to expand our presence in the Midwest, and Pullman is the ideal place for us to do so.”
The project will be Gotham Greens’ second greenhouse in Pullman. The company currently operates a 75,000-square-foot greenhouse on the roof of the nearby Method Products factory, which opened in 2015.

“Pullman’s renewal is growing stronger than ever before,” Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) said. “Since taking shape in 2013, today Pullman Park is drawing more than two million consumers annually, Whole Foods is distributing fresh food across North America and Gotham Greens is putting fresh greens on grocery shelves across the region, right here from the Pullman neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.”
The 6.2-acre project site was occupied until 2008 by a Ryerson Steel plant and later acquired by Pullman Park LLC. Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives plans to acquire and prepare the site for $3.68 million and subsequently sell the property to Gotham Greens, which will complete the greenhouse’s vertical construction. Approximately $3.4 million in Tax Increment Financing assistance for the site preparation work is pending City Council approval.

“These are exciting days for Pullman,” David Doig, President of CNI said. “With unparalleled road, rail infrastructure, abundant vacant land, 20-minute proximity to the Loop, complemented by the venerable housing stock and historic buildings, Pullman is becoming the destination where more people are choosing to go to live and work. Along with great leadership from Alderman Beale and a great partnership with Mayor Emanuel, Pullman is the ‘ultimate comeback’ community.”

The new greenhouse adds to the $250 million in recent public and private investments in Pullman, including the 150,000-square-foot Whole Foods Midwest Distribution Center, the 135,000-square-foot Pullman Community Center, the Pullman Park retail center, the 111th Street Gateway retail complex, ArtSpace live/work lofts, and recently designated Pullman National Monument.
