The University of Idaho Department of Theatre is a family of dedicated artists and educators, committed to providing the Northwest’s most affordable and competitive undergraduate and graduate training in the areas of acting, directing, playwriting, design, technology and management. We offer the BA, BS, BFA and MFA degrees.
Students have ample opportunity to gain experience working on our four annual mainstage productions, two studio productions, numerous classroom projects, or in Cornerstone—our energetic Student Theatre Organization. Our teaching philosophy is simple: young theatre artists learn by doing; therefore, our curriculum emphasizes hands-on, real-world opportunities for students working closely with faculty mentors both inside and outside the classroom.
The Department of Theatre is proud to be affiliated with the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which sponsors the annual Rex Rabold Fellowship. This provides a unique opportunity for one of our students to spend a full season in residence at OSF, appearing onstage at one of the nation’s most highly regarded regional theatres. Our department enjoys great success in placing our graduating students into the professional theatre, educational theatre or more related industries.
Graduate students can decide if they want to experience a traditional three-year MFA program in residence at the University of Idaho, or enroll in our unique distance-education format to begin their graduate training while continuing to pursue professional work in the field. Our MA to MFA conversion option allows graduates to transfer up to 20 credits from an approved Master’s toward the terminal degree, the Master of Fine Arts.
