The NAST (National Association of Schools of Theatre) accredited School of Theatre and Dance at Texas Tech University offers rigorous training that places equal importance on attaining a thorough knowledge of the cultural and historical aspects of performance and on practical production experience. 

Texas Tech is one of only two universities in the state to offer all the traditional theatre arts degrees: THEATRE ARTS, Bachelor of ArtsBachelor of Fine ArtsMaster of Artsand Master of Fine Arts and DANCE, Bachelor of ArtsBachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Arts. The department also participates in the Doctor of Philosophy degree in FINE ARTS with an option in Theatre Arts. This diverse educational composition fosters an atmosphere of collaborative growth and development.

Students pursue a core curriculum that includes training in the areas of design, acting, directing, dance, stage management, history, and playwriting.  Students put coursework into practice through participation in the department’s aggressive and diverse production season. Through academic instruction and theatrical productions, we instill in our students a commitment to collaboration, ethics, excellence, scholarship, professionalism, and growth.


In addition, the department sponsors student chapters of Alpha Psi Omega (national theatre honorary), Chi Tau Epsilon (national dance honorary), and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. It is an institutional member of the: American College Dance Festival Association; Association of Arts Administration Educators; Association of Theatre in Higher Education; Southwest Theatre and Film Association; Texas Educational Theatre Association; Texas Nonprofit Theatre Association; and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology.


Students in the department who live on campus can choose to reside in the Fine Arts Learning Community, directly across 18th street from the Theatre building on the second floors of Wall/Gates. This community is open to all students in academic programs in the College of Visual & Performing Arts or who are interested in fine arts. The community is an excellent opportunity for those in art, dance, music and theatre to learn from one another, collaborate together and live in a supportive environment.
