Fearless Artistry. Technical Proficiency. Professional Versatility. Theatre and Dance at the University at Buffalo engages emerging artists, scholars, and audiences dedicated to sustaining and innovating the performing arts across disciplines. Our diverse programs integrate rigorous training, critical understanding, and impassioned creation supported by close faculty mentorship and developed in collaboration with internationally recognized guest artists.

The cornerstone of UB’s Design and Technology program is practical application alongside supportive lecture. We provide students with challenging opportunities to learn in the classroom, and to apply that learning through hands-on experiences. In the classroom, you learn to recognize your inspiration, develop your ideas, and communicate your vision; in the Center for the Arts, you work with professionals to execute those ideas in realized production. Students engage with faculty and guest artists on the latest developments in theatre technology and design such as automation, wearable media, site-specific work, and digital practices including projection design. We offer two degrees with Design and Technology concentration, a BFA and a BA.

The BFA degree is for students interested in developing specific skills and who are willing to commit to structured, intensive, studio-based training. BFA students in Design and Technology receive comprehensive training in all aspects of production including Scene, Lighting, Sound, Props, and Costume Design as well Stage Management, Technical Direction, Scenic Painting, Live Event Production, and more.

UB’s Theatre BA program includes study in a broad range of theatrical disciplines covering the artistic, literary, historical, and technical aspects of theatre and performance, while encouraging students to design their curriculum around a specific focus in production or scholarship. The flexibility of the degree allows for an open exploration and adaptability based on a students’ unique area of interest.
