United States Volt Hockey Association
The United States Volt Hockey Association (USVHA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to adaptive sports for individuals with physical disabilities. We focus on growing volt hockey, an exciting and inclusive power wheelchair hockey sport designed for players with limited upper and lower body mobility. Volt hockey provides an opportunity for individuals, particularly those with muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries, and other physical disabilities, to compete in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Volt hockey originated in Denmark in the 1990s as an accessible sport for individuals with physical disabilities. It quickly gained popularity in Scandinavia, spreading to Sweden and Norway, where leagues and national tournaments have flourished. The sport has since expanded to Germany and Canada, where dedicated clubs have helped grow the community. In 2021, volt hockey was introduced to the United States with the formation of the Boston Whiplash, the nation’s first team. Since then, the sport has continued to develop in North America, with more teams forming and international competitions bringing players together across borders.
At the USVHA, we work to increase awareness of volt hockey across the United States by supporting new teams, providing specialized equipment, and organizing training camps, tournaments, and demonstrations. Through our outreach efforts, we collaborate with disability organizations, rehabilitation centers, and adaptive sports groups to introduce more people to the sport and create lasting opportunities for participation.
Volt hockey is more than just a game—it fosters community, independence, and improved physical well-being. Research has shown that players benefit from increased cardiovascular activity, social engagement, and the opportunity to experience the thrill of competition. Our mission is to make volt hockey accessible to more individuals nationwide, empowering them through sport and ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has the chance to be part of a team.
