The Department of Emergency Medicine is passionately involved in the professional advancement of medical students, residents and fellows of the Keck School of Medicine. The department has established itself as a center for innovation in emergency medicine education and is unique in its philosophy of teaching the unparalleled skills that our specialty requires. The curriculum is progressive and innovative, ensuring a solid foundation in the full breadth of the specialty while still providing our trainees the flexibility to pursue their own individual goals.

Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Since its inception in 1971, more than 600 physicians have graduated from our program – the largest alumni body of emergency medicine specialists both in the United States and internationally. Our graduates have excelled in every aspect of the field, and are well represented in academic medicine, subspecialty practice, community leadership and public service.

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers a wide range of subspecialty opportunities for its residents-in-training. One of the advantages of training in a 4-year program is the flexibility in the curriculum that residents are given. This allows our residents to carve out a niche for themselves within the larger specialty of emergency medicine.
