Say Hi to Australian composer Jodie Blackshaw this Midwest!
Never before have we had such access to information. As a result of this, the 21st century child views the world through very different eyes. Children can learn how to make cupcakes on YouTube, explore the entire Earth (and Moon!) at the click of a button, and find the answers to just about any question.
What impact does this have on our approach to education and in particular, learning in a large ensemble? For the most part, the 21st century school-based conductor can no longer assume the role of the all-knowing “Master”. Now more than ever is it imperative that rehearsals enable creative, self-discovery moments with focus placed on process as well as performance.
So the question is, have you ever played a ‘Blackshaw’ with your wind ensemble? If you have, then you know that a work by this Australian composer-educator is different from the norm. You will know that it takes you, the Director, on an alternate educational pathway that embraces some of these 21st century challenges. You will also know that each piece is a surprise package, an audience favourite that also presents interesting conducting challenges.
Curious? Come meet Jodie in person and explore the possibilities.
