The Foundation for the Advancement of String Education (FASE, Inc.) is a non-profit that promotes the philosophy and pedagogy of Dr. George Bornoff by providing teacher training, classroom resources, and financial support for orchestra programs in underserved communities. We host MANY online and in-person workshops where teachers can receive Graduate or Continuing Ed Credits, and we also work to advance equity through the FASE Diverse String Teachers Fellowship, a professional development program that provides mentorship and resources to early career teachers from underrepresented backgrounds.

  NATIONAL BORNOFF WORKSHOP

  Join us for a deep dive into all things string pedagogy with a focus on the Bornoff Approach! This in-person workshop features an extensive study of Bornoff pedagogy and materials for teachers of all levels of instruction in class or studio settings. Participants will have the opportunity to track their courses according to their previous Bornoff experience, with choices including instrument and level-specific classes each day. 

  Mornings are filled with pedagogy focused on navigating content and HOW to use the Bornoff group teaching techniques in multiple class settings.

  The afternoons offer a variety of instrument and level-specific sessions where you can select the schedule that best suits your needs. Brush up on thumb position, fine-tune your knowledge of the double bass, work on a fiddle tune, get comfortable with improvisation, or get your vibrato moving! (Extra instruments available for no additional fee.)

  Evenings will be filled with reading sessions, performances, practice-teaching time, and fun-filled relaxing hangout opportunities.

• 2023-24 Diverse String Teachers Fellowship (Dec 05, 2022)

  The Diverse String Teachers Fellowship (DSTF) is a professional development program aiming to advance the inclusion, retention, and overall success of orchestral music educators from underrepresented backgrounds. The program provides a support system in which teachers of color can connect with peers to share and process their unique experiences, grow their skill and confidence as pedagogues, learn from diverse mentors, and position themselves as leaders in the string teaching profession.

  CORE PROGRAM COMPONENTS

  Funding and resources are provided so that every fellow can participate in the following:

  • Training – National Bornoff Workshop (two summers, 80 hours total); American String Teachers Association National Conference (24 hours); DSTF Curriculum including Responsive Teaching, Social Emotional Learning, Anti-racist and Decolonizing Approaches, Career Development, and String Technique/Pedagogy (40+ hrs); Graduate credits and CEUs available
  • Resources – Bornoff Approach books, media, and how-to courses; Classroom stipends for sheet music and supplies; Resource newsletter; Partner offerings
  • Mentorship – Individual pedagogy support including school visits and recorded lesson feedback tasks; Career advancement support including coaching and structured leadership opportunities; Personal mentor teacher
  • Community – Private online space for collaborating, sharing, and processing; Monthly virtual meetups; American String Teachers Association membership

  PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY

  Early-career orchestra teachers (≤ 8 years of experience) who identify as Black, Latinx, Native American, Middle Eastern or North African, and Asian or Pacific Islander. We also welcome teachers on the LGBTQ+ and disability spectrums.

  NOMINATIONS

  We welcome nominations for any string/orchestra teacher working in school or community music programs with a demonstrated interest in learning and applying the Bornoff Approach.
