Iotron Medical has been working with the Argonne National Laboratory since 2011 on the scale-up of copper-67 radioisotope production using high-energy electron beam. Copper-67 is a beta emitter with highly desirable properties for theranostic targeted radioisotope therapy (small molecule or antibodies). It can also be paired with copper-64 for detailed PET imaging.
Copper-67 is being produced today at 3 sites in North America in quantities sufficient to support on-going pre-clinical and clinical development. Iotron will commission a commercial-scale production facility for copper-67 to meet growing demand as therapies progress through clinical trials. The Argonne technology is the only proven method for production of high specific activity copper-67 in the multi-Curie quantities needed to support premarket approved radiopharmaceuticals.
Iotron Medical is part of the Iotron group, an organization pioneering the use of electron beam technology in a wide variety of applications since 1991. Electron beam is used at Iotron’s sites in Vancouver, Canada and Columbia City, Indiana, USA to sterilize medical devices, cross-link polymers used in orthopedics, and sanitize agricultural products. These processes are all carried out to current Good Manufacturing Practice standards.
