    Lead Lined Cabinets or Laboratory Furniture is designed for the safe storage of radioisotopes or radioactive materials inside the cabinet to ensure full protection of healthcare providers from harmful radiation. Standard cabinets are usually lead lined with 6.35 mm or 1/4” thick lead up to 25.4 or 1” thick lead. Cabinets are fabricated from low carbon steel that clad the lead on both sides, resulting with the lead fully encapsulated with no exposure to it. Cabinet designs include cupboard doors with or without shelving or individual drawers or a combination of both. Cabinets can be a flat top painted surface of a stainless steel top with backsplash and marine drip edges. The top may include drop through chutes for sharp containers.  Custom designed cabinets can be provided that support higher energy radiation sources and can be lead lined as thick as 6” of lead.

    Standard features include individual key locks for every drawer or door with magnetic locking lever closures to prevent unauthorized access.  Legs with adjustable height allow cabinet to be adjusted for unleveled floors or reducing the height to fit under exist sting countertops. Leveling the cabinet ensures doors do not swing open or slam shut. These freestanding legs allow full access underneath the cabinet from either direction for a pallet jack or forklift to lift and move the cabinet to its final dedicated spot within the laboratory or nuclear medicine area. All doors and drawers include a recessed notch step style to allow the door or drawer to seat inside of the cabinet rather than a flush door or drawer. This ensures a much higher and more reliable prevention of radiation loss through any seams. All drawers and adjustable pull out shelves incorporate heavy duty glides to make an effortless trouble free use and all carry a maximum 1000 lb. capacity. All doors incorporate heavy duty hinges with grease bearings and bronze thrust washers to prevent them from sagging and easier opening and closing of them.  Cabinets receive a coat of paint that can easily be washed down to ensure unit is disaffected and safe for users. On receipt of an order the client always receives a detailed drawing of the cabinet with dimensions to review before signing off and allowing production to begin. Heavier lead cabinets are fabricated with lead poured into all walls floor, top and bottom as well as all doors and drawer panels, ensuring the absolute maximum lead shielding free form seams or penetrations.

    Cabinets can be custom designed with built-in seismic anchor brackets. Shielded cable ports or outlets, lined with borated polyethylene for Neutron shielding.     CABINET DESIGN:  Type or design or requirement to ensure there is adequate storage room for product or item placed into cabinet. The internal cupboard, shelf or drawer size when door or drawer is closed must be considered to ensure it is adequate in size. The level of adequate shielding or protection must be known.     CABINET SIZE: either outside dimensions or inside dimensions whatever is critical as one dictates the other based on what lead shielding is needed? Note quiet often there are critical dimensions like trying to fit a cabinet between other existing cabinets, or matching current countertop heights or ensuring the product or item fits inside of the cabinet box, drawer, shelf or cupboard. Keep in mind that all our cabinets typically are built on adjustable height legs rather than sitting flat on the floor like our competitors builds. This allows the end user to move from a loading dock to final position via forklift or pallet truck.  A flat bottom doesn’t allow for this. It also allows the end user to adjust for uneven floors or when a cabinet due to its heavy weight sinks into a soft tiled floor to adjust the height. These adjustable legs add approximately 4 inches to overall height.

    CABINET TOP: can be a flat carbon steel top, stainless steel top. We can offer any style but need to know type of stainless steel and finish (e.g. 304 s.s.) and whether it has a front drip edge, back splash, drop port holes for sharp containers or any other modifications.

    CABINET DOORS: Cabinet doors can be a single door, or double doors. All doors require us to put a step into the design to prevent radiation leakage out from the door seams. Double doors would have an overlap seam of lead or an astragal that is a common term in the door industry.

    INTERNAL CABINET OPTIONS:  We can offer shelves, drawers or other modifications/options. If you require shelves we need to know the load or weight for each shelf and whether the shelf has to be fixed or adjustable in height or if it needs to slide out. We will need to know the adjustments in height or increments if this option is required. For drawers we need to know whether they require dividers, what the weight will be placed into each drawer and the internal size. We can put a lock on each drawer again on the outside or have a door close over all the drawers with one lock. Sometimes it is preferred to have no door and just all drawers. In this method we would make each drawer with a lead faced front but not lead lined in between the drawers. There is no lead placed between any drawers, cupboards, shelves or any other space. Only the outer walls, sides, top, bottom, drawer or door faces.

    LEAD SHIELDING: We can shield the cabinet from 1/32 to 2” or more of lead. In shielding less than 5/8” thick we layer sheet lead inside the cabinet and weld all seams.  For lead over 5/8” thick we pour lead into the walls. When we pour lead it generates a good amount of heat that leaves the opportunity of the walls wanting to budge or distort. To prevent this we must manufacturer the cabinet from thicker steel plate and add temporary reinforcement prior to pouring. Unfortunately thicker plate adds to the inside or overall size of the cabinet.

    CABINET FINISH: Our standard finish is a beige spray on enamel. It can be touched up onsite if scratched quite easily. We can offer a baked powder coat however it does leave the opportunity for chipping if banged and cannot be re-touched if chipped. Our painting is an industrial paint finish and not a fine hospital finish that you might find on a filing cabinet or office furniture. They may be slight imperfections that show through the paint.

    CABINET WEIGHT: We can shield the cabinet from 1/32 to 2” or more of lead.      Our Pet Unit Dose cabinets are ideal for the small PET hot labs. This robust cabinet is intended for the placement of your L-Block, and built in dose calibrator shield to the top work surface. A cut out for your sharp container is included with a shielded lid. A dose calibrator can be placed on a raised stand that can be bolted to the work surface. The top work surface is a 304 stainless steel with a partial 4” high backsplash.     Our Single and Dual Cupboard Base cabinet is our most popular cabinet. It features either one single cupboard door or two side by side.   • Designing and building radiation shielding can pose a variety of challenges, such as limitations on space, price, weight, and installation. One of the most versatile forms of shielding material that is used to overcome these challenges is lead—it’s less expensive, readily available, and easy to process into finished radiation shielding products. Lead is used in the construction, nuclear power, non-destructive testing, academic, and medical fields for radiation protection and shielding.

    Material Properties

    Lead is a soft metal that can be easily scratched or dented. Being ductile and malleable makes lead very easy to work with. It is a very dense metal with a density of 11.34 g/cc, approximately 4 times the density of aluminum. Lead has a melting point of 327oC which makes it an ideal metal to cast.

    There are many different alloys and purities of lead available. One of the most common is ASTM B-29 lead, which has a minimum purity of 99.94% lead. The lead is refined to reach this level of purity. Antimony is a common metal alloyed with lead to increase hardness and mechanical strength. Antimonial lead typically has an antimony concentration of 1-6%.

    Lead is toxic and can accumulate within the body if proper precautions are not taken. Encapsulating the lead in metal, plastic, or paint will greatly reduce the risk of lead exposure.

    Lead Attenuation

    Lead is very effective at shielding gamma radiation. Because of the density of lead, its high atomic number, and stable isotopes, lead is ideal for stopping gamma and x-ray radiation. For a gamma ray from a Colbalt-60 source, pure lead has a Half-Value Layer (HVL – the thickness of shielding required to reduce the level of radiation by 50%) of approximately 12.5 mm (0.49 in). A lead shield will be thinner than a steel (21.6 HVL) or concrete (60.5 HVL) shield of the same effectiveness in shielding a Co60 source. From an x-ray source with a peak voltage of 200 kV, the HVL of lead would be 0.52 mm (0.021 in).

    Lead Processing

    Typically lead can come in several different forms. It is common to melt the lead and either cast it in a mold or fill a pre-made fabrication. Lead bricks are an example of a cast lead product. The molten lead is poured into a preheated mold and as the lead cools, the lead shrinks and the casting can be removed from the mold. Lead can also be machined to achieve tighter tolerance than would be possible with just a casting. Typically, alloys of lead, such as 2-4% antimonial lead, are easier to machine because the antimony makes the lead harder and less prone to chipping when cut.

    Extruding and rolling lead is possible because lead is very malleable. Sheet lead is formed from rolling lead, and is a very useful product for shielding. In x-ray or gamma testing applications, sheets of lead can be easily installed in barriers, walls, and mounted on drywall and plywood. Lead can come as thin as 1/32”, making it easy to bend and fold around walls. The most common thicknesses of sheet lead used are 1/32”, 1/16”, 1/8”, and ¼”.

  • Nuclear Medicine is a growing field with innovations in technology, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic purposes. Variety of workplaces including hospitals, universities and research facilities are all involved in producing, researching and administering radiopharmaceuticals. With the increase and widespread use of nuclear medicine, the demand for shielding increases as well. There are many shielding products geared towards the nuclear medicine industry. Below are some of the common shielding products that would be used in a lab or clinic setting.

    Lead and Tungsten Pigs

    Lead and Tungsten PigsA commonly used product in the industry is vials for storing syringes and radioisotopes. Generally, in the medical field a pig is a round container made of lead or tungsten that is used for shielding from radiation the radiopharmaceutical.

    Solid tungsten is a very commonly used material because it is durable and has slightly better gamma radiation attenuation than lead. The drawback of tungsten is that it is significantly more expensive than the lead. Solid tungsten can also be made into syringe shields and vial transport containers.

    Lead pigs can be susceptible to being damaged or dented over time but is often more cost effective than tungsten. The pigs can be encased in metal or plastic to help the pig hold its form over time and to reduce any potential lead exposure. Pictured is a lead pig that provides ¾” of solid lead shielding.

    For both lead and tungsten pigs, features such as threaded lids, latches for the lid, painting and custom designed sizes are very possible.

    Lead Lined Cabinets and Storage Containers

    A big product used by the nuclear medicine industry is lead lined furniture. These are specially built cabinets or containers that allow forLead Lined Cabinets and Storage Containers the storage of radioactive waste, isotopes, radiopharmaceuticals and other materials. The shielding in these containers can vary from 1/16” up to over 2” of shielding. The lead inside the cabinet is fully enclosed with steel and is made by either placing sheet lead or casting lead inside steel cabinet. Lead lined storage and waste containers are made in a similar manner. These products are commonly found in hospitals and labs as they allow for easy access to radioisotopes, while protecting people from any radiation exposure. Specially designed doors and openings are used to eliminate the risk of radiation leakage.

    Lead Brick Caves and L Blocks

    Lead Brick Caves and L BlocksFor doing lab work with radioisotopes, it is important to keep the lab technicians’ safety in mind. Lead brick caves are constructed from standard lead brick and can be painted. For easy set up and customize workspace, while providing adequate protection from radiation, lead bricks can be a very useful shielding to have around the lab.

    L-Blocks can have up to 2” of lead shielding and usually include a lead glass window that can include up to 8” of glass. This provides radiation protection to the front and face of workers while allowing them to see what they are working on. Generally, L-Blocks are metal fabrications lined with lead.

  • Radiation Protected CabinetEnsuring that people and products are well-protected from radiation in the work environment is crucial. This is especially the case in the medical research industry, wherein researchers and professionals are working with fragile products and solutions that can be exposed to radiation and other hazards.

    To that end, our team at MarShield was commissioned by a biopharmaceutical company in Indiana to manufacture custom cabinetry in which our client could securely store sensitive products and equipment.

    The client does medical research to find new cancer treatments that pair companion imaging agents with Small Molecule Drug Conjugates (SMDCs). Accuracy and preservation of materials with which their team works is critical to this challenging work.

    Custom-Built Cabinetry

    Radiation Protected Cabinet

    Working with our client, the MarShield team designed and manufactured three cabinets with custom specifications in depth, height, accessibility, and mobility to address their stringent requirements.

    Lined with ¼” thick encapsulated pure lead and constructed with mild carbon steel, each cabinet was designed and customized for a specific purpose. While each had its own specifications and requirements, cabinets were outfitted with locking doors, a shielded cable outlet opening, sliding shelving, and astragal overlap to keep contents safe and preserved.

    Equipped with heavy-duty swivel casters, wheel locks, step-down floor lock, and heavy-duty self-locking handles as well as wrap around push handles, these cabinets were built for security and mobility.

    Finally, each units’ surface was prepared and coated appropriately with polyurethane enamel to protect both its interior and exterior. With smooth rounded edges and chrome finishes, not only were the cabinets built with the utmost in protection and utility, but their design is versatile enough to work in any of the environments to which they will be exposed.

  • An area where material science is advancing the field of radiation shielding is in the development of non-lead shielding materials. Lead is used today because it’s cost-effective, easy to work with, and most importantly has the ability to reduce gamma radiation. 

    One drawback of lead is that it is a toxic substance if ingested into the body.  Given the toxicity, innovations are being made to produce thinner, more flexible and effective non-lead shielding solutions. Specifically, polymers are being utilized for their material properties. They are infused with tungsten and other metals to produce a new generation of shielding products.

    Composition of Polymer Based Shielding Materials

    Non-lead alternatives come in a variety of forms. The main sheet form is metal-impregnated polymers which are a polymer that contains a shielding material. This capitalizes on the shielding properties of the metal, and the flexibility of the polymer.

    The composition of these materials can vary depending on the product but generally, a polymer base is used for the product.  Materials such as metals and non-lead, high atomic numbered elements are added for shielding including Tungsten, Bismuth, and Iron. The percentage of these materials can vary anywhere from 0-95% of the material depending on the product.  In addition, to improve the material properties, other materials like glass and carbon fibers are also in the material.

    Nanotek Shielding

    Nanotek TechnologyTM  has been developed to provide an alternative to lead radiation shielding. The result is a polymer-based shielding material. It can be made into thin materials to replace sheet lead and installed on walls with its adhesive backing, or the material can be used to provide thicker shielding in the form of interlocking bricks.  This material can be molded into custom shielding pieces and used as curtains, shielded vests or in nuclear medicine vials.

    Metal Impregnated Polymers

    These materials have been commonly used in the Nuclear industry as an alternative to lead wool blankets. Usually made with a shielding material of iron, bismuth or tungsten, these materials come in sheet form and in the form of strips for wrapping around and shielding pipes. Much like the Nanotek, this material can also be molded for custom shielding pieces. In addition, magnets, or gromets can be placed in the materials to allow for hanging from racks or attaching to metal surfaces. Protective layers can also be added to increase the durability of a sheet of material.

  • Lead lined cabinets are utilized across a wide variety of industries including hospitalsnuclear medicine and the nuclear power industry. Some of the applications of shielded cabinets are for storing radioisotopes, radioactive waste, and providing shielding while operating x-ray tubes and protecting sensitive electronic devices from external radiation damage.

    MarShield’s shielded cabinets are custom manufactured, in steel or stainless steel, and lined with 1/32” to 2” or thicker lead.  For shielding thicknesses less than 5/8”, lead sheets are layered, while over 5/8”, the lead is poured into the cabinet walls. Both methods provide seamless radiation protection.

    Features and Designs

    MarShield has a series of standard designs of cabinets that show features and general design of cabinets.  Most cabinets are custom designed and built to best serve the end-use of the cabinets.

    Doors, Drawers and Shielded Openings

    A shielded cabinet should provide complete radiation protection while allowing for easy access to the interior. All MarShield cabinet drawers and doors are designed to prevent radiation leakage by overlapping joints and seams. Radiation generally travels in straight lines, so by including steps and interlocking doors, this reduces the risk of radiation leakage from these openings. Shielded lids and openings can be provided at the top of the cabinet to allow for waste disposal of radioactive material.

    Some cabinets require electronics to be powered inside the cabinets. Shielded openings that allow cables to run inside without compromising shielding can also be included. These openings can be described as maze entrance, as they eliminate the possibility of straight-line radiation leaving the cabinet.

    Doors can include handles that lock shut to secure the contents of the cabinet. Heavy-duty industrial hinges are used to take the weight of the lead-lined doors. Additionally, if the weight of the lead-lined door is still too much, MarShield can offer to install gas struts that reduce the amount of force required to open doors.  All cabinet hardware is welded onto the outside of the cabinets, rather than bolted as to not compromise shielding.

    Cabinet Weight

    A factor that should be considered is the weight of what you are storing as well as the overall weight of the cabinet. Typically, the adjustable interior shelves can support up to 100 lbs. The overall weight of the cabinet can be quite heavy. MarShield cabinets include 4” adjustable legs to allow the cabinet to be moved easily by forklift or pallet truck. The maximum load that the floor the cabinet is installed on should be checked before installing a lead-lined cabinet.

    Alternative Shielding

    MarShield can off lead-free NanotekTM to protect against gamma radiation or if the cabinet is required to shield against neutron radiation, borated polyethylene can be used as shielding.

    Finish and Countertops

    All MarShield cabinets come with a beige spray epoxy enamel or colour of the customers’ choosing. Additionally, if desired, there is the option of a 304 stainless steel countertop, that includes a spill-proof lip around the edge of the countertop and a backsplash.

    Considerations

    Some considerations when designing a cabinet are:

    • Required inside or outside dimensions – Cabinets are built based on the customers’ needs so the space the cabinet needs to fit into, or the required interior space needs to be known.
    • Shielding thickness and type of shielding required – This will determine the thickness of the cabinet walls and the method used to build the walls.
    • Number of shelves required in the cabinet or additional areas needed for storage.
    • If the doors need to be locking and the location of hinges and handles.
