ARRT: A half-century in nuclear medicine technology

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is the world''s largest credentialing organization promoting high quality patient care in medical imaging, interventional procedures, and radiation therapy.

More than 50 years ago, ARRT introduced the nation''s first certification exam in nuclear medicine technology. Today, ARRT has more than 12,000 technologists certified and registered in nuclear medicine. Those technologists meet preliminary education requirements and pass an ethics screening even before they schedule a test. The exam itself—as for those of all ARRT disciplines—is overseen by discipline-specific experts. Volunteers from the nuclear medicine community work with ARRT staff to conduct regular practice analyses, update content specifications and clinical competency requirements, and write exam questions.

Beyond offering initial certification and registration, ARRT ensures that technologists meet ongoing qualifications, such as annual renewal and ethics attestation, biennial continuing education requirements, andfor credentials issued since 2011Continuing Qualifications Requirements that promote continuing professional development.
