The U.S. Department of Energy Isotope Program supports the production, as well as the development of production techniques, of radioactive and stable isotopes that are in short supply. Isotopes are high-priority commodities of strategic importance for the Nation and are essential for energy, medical, and national security applications and for basic research. A goal of the program is to make critical isotopes more readily available to meet domestic needs.

The National Isotope Development Center (NIDC) is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Isotope Program (DOE IP). It serves as an interface with the user community and manages the coordination of isotope production across the program facilities at Argonne, Brookhaven, Idaho, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories. These facilities produce stable and radioactive isotopes in short supply using reactors, accelerators, and other methods.

• Join us at the DOE Isotope Program Overview and Breakfast at SNMMI (Jun 09, 2023)

  Join us for the DOE Isotope Program Overview presentation and breakfast on Monday, June 26 at 7:00 a.m. in room E451a at McCormick Place.  The director of the Isotope Program, Dr. Jehanne Gillo, will present an overview of the program, discuss isotope availability, planned development efforts and how current world events are affecting isotope supply chains.

• Announcing domestic supply of lead-203 (Jun 09, 2023)

  The U.S. Department of Energy Isotope Program is pleased to announce lead-203 (Pb-203) has been added to our catalog and is available for purchase. Pb-203 has drawn interest as a SPECT imaging isotope analogue to the therapeutic Pb-212, an alpha-emitter. Its addition to the NIDC Catalog establishes a theranostic matched pair of isotopes. Pb-203 will be shipped on a monthly basis with the first production run set for mid-May.

  The new lead isotope will be produced by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Cyclotron Facility, a university partner in the DOE IP University Isotope Network. The Isotope Program is filling a gap in the market as there are currently no other domestic producers.
